Harlem Quartet Performs Benefit Concert at Suitland High School

Harlem Quartet Performs Benefit Concert at Suitland High School

The Harlem Quartet is a world-class ensemble of string musicians whose mission is to advance diversity in classical music and to support the arts programs at our public schools. It is for this reason that they are performing a benefit concert at Suitland High School to support The Buses Matter Program at 7pm on Saturday, October 22nd.

There was a large concern over the 2011-2012 Prince George’s County school budget and the removal of  bus transportation funds. Suitland High School students in the Visual and Performing Arts Program held a rally in March of 2011 to voice their concern that by cutting the buses, the school board would inevitably cut their program. In the end, as a result of the coverage this event received, the students voices were heard, and the buses were saved for at least another year.

Public input will be used to develop recommendations that will be presented to the Board of Education.

Topics include addressing boundary concerns at Kingsford, Highland Park, Yorktown, and Baden elementary schools; discussing the possibility of shifting sixth grade into middle schools; adjusting boundaries for specialty programs; and ensuring that all students in a neighborhood attend the same schools.
