A Mother's Love Letter: "The Way that I Love You"

A Mother's Love Letter: "The Way that I Love You"

It’s indescribable, really . . . the way that I love you. I want more for you than I could ever imagine wanting for myself.

IAFF Local 1619 Firefighters and Paramedics Donate Smoke Alarms

IAFF Local 1619 Firefighters and Paramedics Donate Smoke Alarms

This story comes to us from Mark Brady:

?Every firefighter knows that a working smoke alarm provides residents with an early alert of a fire inside their home, this is especially important when everyone is asleep, a time when the most home fire fatalities occur. A working smoke alarm improves the chances of you and your family surviving a home fire by 50%. With an early warning of a fire and the fact that everyone inside the home is safe outside also increases the probability that firefighters will be able to stay safe and go home at the end of the shift without injury.

Helping Women in Transition Make Sound Financial Decisions

Helping Women in Transition Make Sound Financial Decisions

A Woman in Transition is a woman who finds herself bracing for a new phase in life.  “Transition” is not just a change in routines, relationships or social status – it is a fundamental shift in a woman’s identity.  It could be brought on with purposeful intent, such as voluntarily retiring from a successful career, or entering a second marriage.  It could be brought on by an unexpected surprise, such as losing a spouse to a heart attack, or becoming single after a painful divorce.  For a Woman in Transition, the uncertainty of the future can result in anxiety and fear and/or excitement and anticipation.

Staying Fit Locally, Quit Making Excuses

Staying Fit Locally, Quit Making Excuses

It is predicted that, over the course of the present decade, Americans will be looking to spend less money on exercise options and a lot less time to it due to tighter budgets and hectic schedules. Combine that with a mostly unregulated commercial food industry that still relies heavily on inexpensive and low quality resources high in fat, salt and processed additives. Not enough time to move and poor food choices at the ready. This is our nation’s crisis with obesity, which is expected to climb as high as 85%, up from an already disheartening 60%. Prevention is possible, through awareness and a little creativity. While nutrition accounts largely for body fat content, exercise raises metabolism and muscle can fill up space previously occupied by fat cells. It’s a package deal. Making wholesome food choices (yes, it really is that easy—just do it) will give you energy to work burning fat.
