Ben Cherington and Kylie Levy of Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) Performing Arts Academy of Lorton, Va. and Alexandria, Va. were recently recognized for All-Star Cast by the Virginia Theatre Association Conference for their performances in I Never Saw Another Butterfly. This was the first time Metropolitan School of the Arts had participated in the conference. Cherington, an 11th grader from Burke, Va., and Levy, a 10th grader from Fairfax, Va. are students at Metropolitan School of the Arts. For more information, go to www.metropolitanarts.org.

Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) also earned the 2014 Virginia Theatre Association Conference award for Best Costume Design and was recognized for Staging, as well as received an honorable mention for Best Play, I Never Saw Another Butterfly.

Water main break on Silver Hill Rd in Suitland will impact AM commute

SUITLAND, Md. (WUSA9) -- A water main break in Suitland will cause a headache for drivers and impact service for over a hundred customers Thursday morning.

Officials with the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission tell WUSA*9 the break is occurred in a 71-year-old 14-inch main around 8:00 Thursday night. Right now the northbound lanes of Silver Hill Road are closed between Brooks Drive and Royal Plaza Drive. The southbound lanes were reopened overnight.

According to Jerry Irvine, spokesman for WSSC, crews have been working through the night to shut off water to the area. Approximately 150 customers are impacted by the water main break.

Two schools in the area, Suitland High and Drew Freeman Middle still have water and classes are expected to begin on time.

Repairs could take awhile. The pipe line is next to a gas line.

Police ID deputies in fatal shooting in Suitland

SUITLAND, Md. (WUSA9) -- Two sheriff's deputies are on administrative leave after one of them shot a man in Suitland while responding to a domestic disturbance early on Thursday morning.

Prince George's County Sheriff's Office authorities say that deputies went to a home in the 2300 block of Houston Street at approximately 1 a.m. following a 9-1-1 call for a domestic disturbance with a gun.

A woman told the deputies she called 911 after Michael Ricardo Minor assaulted her and she believed he retrieved a handgun before he left. While they were still on the scene, Minor returned home and confronted the deputies.

At some point, Deputy First Class Kendal Wade fired his weapon and struck Minor. Minor was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6 a.m., say authorities.

2 hit by vehicle in PG County

SUITLAND, Md. (WUSA9) -- Two victims are critically injured and were taken to the hospital after being hit by a vehicle in Suitland, Md. early Saturday morning, police said.

The accident happened around 12:10 a.m. when a man and a woman were crossing onto Silver Hill Road and were hit by a vehicle traveling southbound, authorities said.

The driver stayed on the scene, police said.

School supply drive in style: PG group helps local kids

SUITLAND, Md. (WUSA9) -- A group of determined local youth heard about WUSA9's Operation Backpack and decided to take matters into their own hands and give back to their community by collecting school supplies for children in need this school year.

Operation Fill the Backpacks all started with 19-year-old, Gia Alexander from Suitland, Md. She saw WUSA9's Operation Backpack on Twitter, loved the idea and thought it would be the perfect opportunity for her to do something similar for her community.

The young philanthropist brought children and youth together from all over the region to help take part in a free charity event that took place Saturday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the New Creation in Christ Baptist Church in Suitland, Md.

A capsule collection for Colletto’s Cruise 2015 line and Lefebure’s first venture into fashion design, the five-piece graphic swimsuits and beachwear debuted at the Miami Swim Show on July 19th.

DC man arrested for killing his girlfriend

SUITLAND, Md. (WUSA9) -- The Prince George's County Police Department arrested a 43-year-old D.C. man who police said, shot and killed his girlfriend in Suitland Md. Sunday evening.

Authorities responded to the 3200 block of Sycamore Lane for the report of a shooting around 7 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Police found 43-year-old Tamu Bynum of Suitland, Md. suffering from gunshot wounds, authorities said. Bynum was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

Bynum and her boyfriend, 43-year-old Devin James Wooten of SE, D.C. got into an argument that escalated into a shooting, police said.

Wooten turned himself in Monday, police said.

Wooten is being charged with second degree murder.
