UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA9) -- A Suitland man who pleaded guilty to the death of his girlfriend's son was sentenced Friday to 50 years in prison.

Clifton Bernard, 28, pleaded guilty in December to second-degree murder and child abuse in the death of two-year-old Jamir Shipe.

On May 22, 2013, Bernard was watching Shipe while Shipe's mother was at work. At one point, Bernard became angry with Shipe and assaulted him, ramming his head through the drywall in the apartment. Prosecutors say the beating caused severe head trauma and Shipe died from his injuries a day later.

In addition to the prison sentence, Bernard also received five years of supervised probation.
