Prince George's Co. Police Officers Are "Running the Beat"

Officers from the Prince George's County Police Department are going for a run on Wednesday, July 18 in Hillcrest Heights/Marlow Heights in an event called "Running the Beat." Officers have been running through focus areas since April in support of  the county-wide Transforming Neigborhoods Initiative.

The goal is to engage the community and be a visible presence in the following focus neighborhoods: Langley Park, East Riverdale/Bladensburg, Suitland/Coral Hills, Kentland/Palmer Park, Hillcrest Heights/Marlow Heights and Glassmanor/Oxon Hill.

FOTODC Looks For The Best Area Photographer

Calling all photographers. FotoDC is on the hunt for the most interesting work by Washington area photographers for the 2nd annual Uncover/Discover exhibition.

The panel of curators includes Elizabeth Krist, Senior Photo Editor at National Geographic; Jayme McLellan, Director of Civilian Art Projects and Ken Ashton, Artist and Museum Professional.

Curators will select work from emerging and established photographers who sent in their stuff for a chance to be featured in two exhibitions this fall. 

"It is our mission to discover and spotlight the work of Metro Area photographers,” said Theo Adamstein, Executive Director and Founder of FotoDC.

Free HIV Testing In PG County

Free HIV Testing In PG County

In honor of National HIV Testing Day free HIV testing will be offered at the Clinton Walgreens in Prince George's County on June 27-29 between the hours of 3:00 – 7:00 p.m.

The Prince Georges County Health Department and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), Infectious Disease and Environmental Health Administration (IDEHA) have partnered with Greater Than AIDS and Walgreens to offer free screenings.

“The HIV/AIDS rates in Prince George’s County are too high and it is the goal of my administration to utilize all resources available to make these rates as well as rates of other sexually transmitted diseases decrease,” said Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III.

According to the CDC, the number of Marylanders diagnosed and living with HIV at the end of 2010 was 30,132. Maryland ranked 2nd among U.S. states and territories in the rate of AIDS diagnoses during 2010.

Alexandria Seaport Foundation receives $50K grant at Economic Club event with guest Warren Buffett

Buffett and David Rubenstein, The Economic Club of Washington, DC's President, are among business leaders at 25th anniversary celebration on June 5th where 10 community organizations, including the Alexandria Seaport Foundation, received a total of $500,000 in grants

The Alexandria Seaport Foundation (ASF), which offers disadvantaged youth and young adults a paid, work-based apprentice program in boat building that prepares participants for careers in the building trades, received a $50,000 grant from The Economic Club of Washington, D.C. at its 25th anniversary on June 5th at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park.
