Patriots Technology Training Center (Patriots) is hosting their1st Annual Solar System Competition.  The purpose of this event is to create interest in the solar system among middle school students (6th-8th grades) in the Washington, D.C. area.

The competition consists of seven teams of 10 students who have completed a research project on a selected planet in the solar system.  The project will include a five-page research paper, brochure, original web page, poster board, and an oral presentation, to be given at the awards reception on May 12th.

The Solar System Competition judge’s panel will feature Astronomy professionals who will judge the students’ projects based on a set of predetermined criteria, distributed to the teams prior to the submission of their project.  The awards reception will be held at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Visitor Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.  It will also host teachers, parents, local business leaders, and elected officials.

The winning team will travel to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Space Camp (www.spacecamp.com/museum) in Huntsville, Alabama, valued at $1,700 per student.  The teacher of the winning team will also receive a stipend of $500 dollars to accompany the team and attend a teacher’s workshop at the camp. Scheduled trip date is July 31 - August 5, 2011.

Our major partners are The Inspire Project and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

Several companies, organizations, and interest groups will also be recruited to serve as mentors, sponsors and contributors to the event.
