Giving Thanks and Giving Back: 2011 Horton Kids Cocktails and Crooners

November 3, 2011-- Washington, DC.  Thursday night in Washington was all about giving back and giving thanks at the House of Sweden at the "Horton's Kids 2011 Give Thanks Give Back Fundraiser:  Cocktails & Crooners" in Georgetown.  It’s held each year to thank the many volunteer tutors, mentors, board members, and supporters who help enrich the lives of kids that reside in Ward 8 in Washington.

Horton’s Kids is a 501(c)3 mission is to educate and empower the children of Washington, DC’s Ward 8 by providing comprehensive, direct services which improve the quality of their daily lives and nurture their desire and ability to succeed. These services include tutoring and mentoring along with a host of other wrap around services benefiting children the Anacostia neighborhood.

The evening was full of great food and a silent auction.  The evening featured a D.C. Bravo Top Chef star, Spike Mendelsohn who donates his time, gifts, and money to Horton’s Kids Cocktails & Crooners event each year.  He stated, “As a successful restaurant owner on Capitol Hill, I wanted to give back to the community and help kids. I find it ironic that in the shadow of the Capitol, many families are living on less than $10,000 a year.”

In 2011, Horton's Kids was the 2011 Winner of The Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management.  Executive Director Brenda Chamberlain was inspired from the huge turnout and the genuine care and concern supporters have for the children of Ward 8.
