The 27th Annual Women’s History Month Luncheon themed “Women Educated. Women Empowered” will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2012, at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt, Maryland.  Fox 5 Morning News Anchor Allison Seymour will serve as mistress of ceremonies and Dr. Charlene Duke, President of Prince George’s Community College will deliver the keynote address.

“This year’s event should be one of our best.  This is the second year we have featured one of the great woman leaders in Prince George’s County.   I am sure that the attendees will enjoy hearing from Dr. Dukes, a nationally recognized educational leader.  We are also fortunate to have Allison Seymour, one of the region’s most popular news anchors as our host.  With these incredible women on the program, I am confident that this will be an unforgettable event ,” said Baker.

As is past tradition, during the luncheon, the coveted Gladys Noon Spellman Service Award will be presented to a Prince George’s County Government woman who is a resident of the County, possesses strong leadership abilities, has a track record of success and contributes to the community through outside interest and activities.  In addition, Gladys Noon Spellman Scholarship recipients will also be recognized.  The scholarship award amount is $2,000.  Since 1999, the scholarship component has been a part of the annual luncheon.

“Throughout the history of Prince George’s County Government, women have made significant contributions to the workforce,” said Baker.  “I am honored and looking forward to highlighting the service of women in government and celebrating Women’s History Month.”

Throughout her career as a public servant, Gladys Noon Spellman successfully spearheaded many efforts to effect social and political reform in all facets of life for her native Prince George’s County, for the State of Maryland and for the nation.  The Gladys Noon Spellman Award was established in 1986 as a lasting tribute to Congresswoman Spellman and her accomplishments in her long and outstanding career in public service.

In 1987, Congress declared March as National Women’s History Month in perpetuity.  A special Presidential Proclamation is issued every year which honors the extraordinary achievements of American women.
