Fifth-Grade Student Concerts at Strathmore Oct. 11-13

According to the Montgomery County Public School System:

More than 11,000 fifth grade students from Montgomery County Public Schools will experience classical music, many of them for the first time, when the Music Center at Strathmore opens its doors for student concerts on October 11, 12 and 13, 2011. Buses line the streets of Tuckerman Lane and students fill the 2,000-seat concert hall in droves twice a day for three days for this Strathmore tradition, a capstone of the arts center’s community outreach initiatives. The young audience will be treated to a performance by the National Philharmonic, led by Music Director & Conductor Piotr Gajewski, which will introduce them to such iconic compositions as “March” and “Waltz of the Flowers” from The Nutcracker and the 1812 Overture (with live, simulated cannons!) by Tchaikovsky, as well as pieces fromPictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky.

The fifth grader student concerts represent a strong investment in the community. Strathmore also hosts a similar program for second graders – which brings the annual total investment to $150,000 to expose thousands of youngsters to classical music.
